Is Kitchen Interior Design Necessary?

Asking whether kitchen interior design is necessary is kind of like asking whether you really need your fingers and toes…um, well not strictly speaking but they sure come in handy! A well planned kitchen interior design will not only fit well into your home and lifestyle, but should save you time and effort. We aren't talking high-end fashion and finishes here either, what we are really interested in is the function of your new kitchen and how well it works. It's not a great prospect to install a new kitchen pantry only to find it can't be accessed whilst the fridge door is open for example. Likewise, there'd be no point putting your best crockery and glassware on display only to have the bulkiness of your kitchen islands height obscure it from everyone's view! Think practicality and consistency with your lifestyle. Whilst there are limitless uses and purposes for kitchens, I'll focus on just a few of the more common ones dictated by lifestyle.

The Dual Income No Kids Kitchen Interior Design

This type of family is common in our modern age, where people are choosing to have children later in life, if at all. These people typically have a higher dispensable income, eat out more, may travel for business, and have active social lives. These couples value convenience when using their kitchen and will look for time-saving appliances and designs. Characteristic items in this kitchen may be a smaller kitchen pantry and refrigerator, microwave for quick meals or reheating and an espresso or coffee machine. As sharp edges and fingerprints are not such an issue for the childless couple, the kitchen interior design of choice may also contain crisp edges and lots of stainless steel!

The Busy Family's Kitchen Interior Design

Mum runs between dropping kids off to creche, school, sports and library. Dad works long hours and likes to spend time with the family when he is home. The children are energetic and often need support with homework, games and squabbles! In this busy hive of activity, the kitchen can become the epicenter of household life. A practical, simple kitchen interior design is essential for this family. The kitchen pantry in this design may be enlarged to cater for bulk purchases of common items, sinks may need to be double, a microwave and dishwasher are crucial, and the refrigerator will be constantly opened and shut whether mum and dad like it or not. Forethought into this particular design will save energy, time and more importantly, injuries!

The Amateur Chef's Kitchen Interior Design

This keen cook can be identified by their rows of fine spices and condiments and their large collection of recipes, utensils and appliances. Preparation, flowing movement through the space and ease of clean-up are most likely important factors for this cook. A pokey-galley-style kitchen or minimalist kitchen design would have this person pulling their hair out in no time. In-built storage, a walk-in or large kitchen pantry, easy access refrigerator and high-end appliances are key to this kitchen interior design. Lots of counter space is a must for all of the cooking storms that will no doubt be brewing in this place!

The Entertainer's Kitchen Interior Design

Whilst toast and biscuits may suffice for this social-butterfly on most days of the week, come the weekend their kitchen is transformed into a hub of action and life! This is a person who may relish in an occasional dinner party or brunch, and loves to act the host. Their kitchen pantry and refrigerator are probably full of staples that can be quickly whipped up into platters, appetizers and meals to share. There will need to be room for crystal, crockery and glassware as well as ample space for socializing – this host will almost constantly be surrounded by curious guests who want to offer their tasting skills for the next dish being created. Kitchen islands that incorporate a food preparation area as well as a seating area would be perfect. This kitchen interior design may also incorporate some clever features that will aid in disguising mess and disorder from guests; built in waste disposal units, raised edges and sunken sinks can do wonders when used correctly!

So which captain of the kitchen are you? Are you the Entertaining Gilligan of Kitchen Islands or the Innovative Iron Chef? Your needs and desires will certainly be different depending on how you use your kitchen. Could you really imagine a one-size-fits-all kitchen interior design that could work in every instance? No? Ok then, my work here is done!
